This system, based on Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology, can be deployed in three operation modes - in-band within LTE carrier, in the guard-band of LTE carrier, and stand-alone. Guard-band deployment allows the operator to support NB-IoT without requiring new spectrum and with minimal impact to LTE.

Cat-M1, also known as LTE Cat-M, is a low-cost LPWAN technology developed by 3GPP as part of the 13th edition of LTE standard. It's a complementary technology to NB IOT, with faster upload and download speeds of 1Mbps and lower latency of 10 to 15ms.

LTE Cat 4 offers an uplink speed ten times faster and a downlink speed fifteen times faster than LTE Cat 1 measured in Mbps.
